PAINTING & INSTALLATIONS

Spectators - painting with dismantled section of wall install (5 ft. height)

Curiosity about the impact of digital imagery on human perception was the starting point for this work some years ago. As tech evolved to a seamless and extremely accessible OS, the user no longer required knowledge of the code operating in the background. There developed a reliance on devices and an unquestioning acceptance of what the speed of code offers in daily activities, with resulting change in behaviors.

My intrigue with the massive changes, both in social interactions and perceptual comprehension, continues to drive this work. Source material for these paintings is derived from smartphone pics and scanned photographs, some dating from the middle of the 20th century. Images are brought to the painting surface by way of transfer, using the printer as an extension of the painter’s brush.

There is a push and pull struggle with the output of the printer, partially due to the unstable nature of the ink. Within the production of the painting, there is possibility of an alteration over time, somewhat like the ever-changing state of culture at large.

The wall installations employ similar concepts embodied by the paintings but differ in that they are deliberately designed to disappear. A printed image is transferred directly to a wall that has been prepared to allow the absorption of ink into the surface. With the presence of light, the recreated wall image begins to disintegrate soon after it comes into existence. The fade is a slow process, but in essence starts from the moment of existence. The primary emphasis is on transience.
