sculpture (portraits) plaster, reclaimed wood, metals, gauze & latex rubber
Once settled in New York, I immersed myself in the memories and history of the island of Manhattan, and began to work in sculpture as a medium that allows a personal physicality. The resulting structural forms had to do with identifying one’s space; or taking a stance, as in finding one’s grounding.
There is an intrinsic vulnerability in this work given the fragility and specific life spans of the materials used to build the structures. When first presented, a colleague wrote that this work is endowed with attitude . . . along with an edginess and inherent excitability that might spell mischief. Another artist observed that some seem clumsy as if clumsy is an act of being human, and articulate as though speech is part of their purpose.
With the passage of time, and in some cases, the effects of the elements, there is a centered presence re-established within the current state of structural decay.
